Classroom deserted, primary teachers on stir across the State

GUWAHATI, June 18: The Asom Rajyik Sikshak Sanmilani on Monday has put all offices pertaining to the primary education sector across all the districts including 142 educational blocks and 52 sub divisions under lock and key as a part of their stir against deprivation allegedly made by the state government. However, throughout the day, in some of the educational blocks, the administration forcefully broke the key while some agitating teachers were arrested and later freed.

In a communiqué, the secretary general of the Sanmilani, Ratul Chandra Goswami informed the media that from Monday onwards, the members of the Sanmilani have been abstaining from all official works related to the office of the head masters and the preparation of the Gunautsav. Goswami informed the media that over the last couple of years, the Sanmilani held more than 32 series of discussion with the state government at different stages to meet its demands; however, due to the lackadaisical attitude of the authority, the discussion went in vain.

According to the communiqué, the earlier regime of the state government announced that the head masters’ posts will be created to refashion the reaching learning environment of the primary schools of the state. Moreover, the 7th Pay Commission also, in its report suggested the creation besides determining the grade pay of the graduate teachers of the primary schools at Rs 8,700. Accordingly, the graduate teachers of the primary schools have already received their one year’s salaries including 7 month’s arrears on that pay band. Under this given circumstances, Goswami questioned as to why the finance department of the present regime has scraped the creation of the posts of head masters and reduced the grade pay to Rs 7,400.

Taking a dig at the negligence of the state government, Goswami revealed that the department of education has not conducted the scholarship examination for the primary schools in 2017. A large numbers of students who passed the scholarship examination in 2010-2011 are yet to get their stipends. Moreover, the result of the scholarship examination for the Bengali medium conducted in 2015 in Kamrup district is yet to be declared.
