Clean sweep by BJP in Karbi Anglong Municipal polls 2019

Bokajan: In a major boost to the saffron brigade in the hill district of Karbi Anglong, the party managed to sweep in all the 9 town committee in the district and emerged as s clear winner in the civic body polls.

The KAAC administered areas which went for the civic body polls on Tuesday saw a voter turnout of over 70 per cent and the results were declared today.

Inflicting a severe setback to INC and other regional parties, the BJP swept all the seats of Bakaliaghat, Dokmoka and Hamren town in the hill district of Karbi Anglong. The civic polls assume significance ahead of the Lok Sabha Polls, 2019.

The Diphu Town committee which happens to be the largest of all civic bodies in the hill district with 14 wards saw a mandate in favour of the saffron party. The BJP secured 12 seats while INC and an independent candidate settled for one seat each.

In Bokajan, the BJP registered its victory in six wards out of the total seven wards of the town. It needs to mentioned that the BJP fielded two women candidate in Bokajan. In the ward no 1, BJP women candidate faced a lofty defeat at hands of INC candidate with a vote difference of over 50%. However, in the ward no. 2 BJP candidate Smt. Minu Das won the poll battle and is the first elected woman candidate to Bokajan Town Committee since its inception in 1988.

In Howraghat town, the BJP won in three seats, the Congress secured one and another one was won by an independent candidate. Again, out of the total seven seats in Baithalangso Town Committee, the BJP secured four seats, ASDC settled for two and another one seat went to an independent. In the Langhin Town, a similar mandate was seen as BJP swept five wards but lose one to independent candidate Belasor Borah. In Dokamukam, the BJP party secured 4 seats and Congress settled for one.

While expressing happiness over the party's victory, KAAC EM Madhujya Dhekial Phukan said, "We are enthusiastic with the poll results and hope that people will continue to support and vote overwhelmingly for the party's victory in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, 2019."
