Cleanliness and plantation programmes mark I-day celebration in Kokrajhar

KOKRAJHAR, Aug 13: The district administration, Kokrajhar has taken up several programmes to mark the celebration of Independence Day. Programmes like cleanliness drive, plantation, marathon race and cultural activities got underway from Saturday in various places of the district.

As part of the pre-Independence Day programme, the Kokrajhar District Scout and Guide Society on Saturday conducted a cleanliness drive at Kokrajhar Railway Station. A large number of students of scouts and guides of different schools, higher secondary and colleges took part actively in the drive and cleaned the road and rail track.

 The Deputy Commissioner, Kokrajhar, M P Sharma, who is also the chairman of District Scout and Guide Society, Kokrajhar, formally iugurated the cleanliness drive in presence of BTC Education Director Rabi Sankar Borgoyary, Inspector of Schools Jagadish Brahma, former president of All Bodo Women’s Welfare Federation (ABWWF) and present Principal of Debargaon Higher Secondary School, Kan Basumatary and others.

Deputy Commissioner  MP Sharma said the administration had taken up several programmes as per the instruction of the State Government to mark the I-day celebration. He said the illumition of government offices and individual houses in evening, cleanliness drive and plantation programmes had been carried out on Saturday and school students of various schools were sent to NTPC project at Salakati to acquire knowledge regarding the production of power. He said there would be marathon race on Sunday and cultural extravaganza at Bodofa Cultural Complex. He also said the cleanliness drive was a continuous process as part of Swachh Bharat Abhijan Mission and everybody should participate for clean environment.

Sharma said all arrangement was being made for grand celebration of I-day on Monday. The security arrangements had been tightened in order to foil subversive attempt of militant elements during the celebration of the country’s Independence Day.

Meanwhile, all officers and employees of BTC Secretariat also joined the cleanliness and plantation programme on the same day in association with Kokrajhar Social Forestry department. The programme was iugurated by the Principal Secretary of BTC, Biren Chandra Phukan. He said the road leading to BTC Secretariat from Jwhwlao Dwimalu Road was cleaned and saplings were planted on both sides of the road in association with the Social Forestry department.

On the other hand, the Kokrajhar Development Authority also carried out the cleanliness drive in association with Kokrajhar Girls’ College at the college compound. Plantation of saplings was also carried out in the college premises. The programme was taken part by the chairman of the Kokrajhar Development Authority, DD rzary, Principal of Kokrajhar Girls’ College,  Dr.Rupam Kr. Brahma, lecturers and students. The Kokrajhar Sales Tax department also carried out the cleanliness drive in Kokrajhar town on the same day.
