Clock Tower iugurated in Mangaldai town

MANGALDAI, June 21: With the benevolence of the SRD Group of companies founded by the legendary business tycoon Sunda Ram Deka or SRD as was known popularly, the Mangaldai town which is one of the oldest towns in the State, has been decorated with a clock tower and this tower,which may be called ‘Mangaldai Tower’, was iugurated on Intertiol Yoga Day on Tuesday at the No.1 Traffic point near Hanuman Mandir here.

Mangaldai Town was established in between 1833 to 1835 as the British rulers established the district headquarters of undivided Darrang district with present day’s Darrang, Sonitpur, Biswath Chariali and Udalguri districts in Mangaldai. Dedicating it to the people of the district, legislator Guru Jyoti Das, in presence of Darrang Deputy Commissioner Manoj Kumar, Superintendent of Police Sunil Kumar, Mukul Chandra Deka and Rajib Kumar Deka of SRD Group of Companies, senior officials, leading citizens and chairman of Mangaldai Municipality Board, Pratap Bordoloi appreciated the initiative of the SRD Group of Companies towards the welfare and all-round development of the district.

On the other hand, Deputy Commissioner Manoj Kumar formally handed over a set-up of modern public toilet to the Mangaldai Municipal authority close to the busy Traffic Point Chariali. The clock tower, with a height of 30 feet and the public toilet with two separate blocks for both gents and ladies, besides iron free running water facility, has been constructed at an estimated cost of around Rs 10 lakh by SRD Group of Companies

Earlier in presence of more than 1,000 students, senior citizens, members of voluntary organizations and government officials, Deputy Commissioner Manoj Kumar iugurated the Intertiol Yoga Day programme at Gandhi Maidan by lighting a lamp in a traditiol way.  Synchronizing with the celebration of day, the district administration organized a semir, yoga-related competitions and an attractive cultural function.
