CM Sarbananda Sonowal lays foundation stone of flyover and trade centre in Jorhat

JORHAT, Sept 30: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal laid the foundation stone of a flyover at Na-Ali in Jorhat town under North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NEIDS) in Jorhat on Sunday. The flyover is to be constructed with a financial outlay of Rs. 112 crore. Coinciding the occasion, he also laid foundation stone for setting up a trade centre for women at Jorhat.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted the rich heritage of Jorhat and its contribution in enriching the social, intellectual and cultural fields of the State. He underlined the significant roles played by Krishna Kanta Handique, Debeswar Sarma, Mitradev Mahanta and Mehruddin Ahmed towards developing a congenial social environment in Assam and urged the people of Jorhat to play a more leadership role in building a robust future of the state.

He said that as a result of Prime Minister Modi’s visionary leadership, new flight service between Jorhat-Kolkata by Indigo Airways and Jorhat-Delhi as well as Jorhat-Kolkata-Guwahati flight service by Jet Airways could be launched today. The Chief Minister said that under ‘Act East Policy’ of the Government of India, communication received a major push which would lead to remarkable transformation in the region in the days to come.

State PWD Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma informed that while Rs. 67 crore was allocated under NEIDS for construction of the Na-Ali fly over, the State Government also contributed Rs. 45 crore from its own resources. He further said that Rs. 1000 crore was also earmarked for infrastructure development of five towns of the State, including Jorhat, with Rs. 200 crore each town.

The PWD Minister further said that the government would provide Rs. 90 crore for development of villages in Jorhat with Rs. 30 crore per year for three years. He also informed about construction of another flyover at Jorhat, besides introduction of PG courses in each department of Jorhat Medical College and allocation of Rs. 800 crore for improvement of roads of tea garden areas. Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly and local MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami said that an amount of Rs. 400 crore was allocated for improvement of roads of Jorhat during the last two years.

The programme was also attended by Jorhat MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, chairman of Assam State Agricultural Marketing Board, Palit Bora and Deputy Commissioners of Jorhat and Majuli.
