Coal syndicate case: Five accused in jail

GUWAHATI, April 18: The Court of the Special Judge, Guwahati sent the five officials, who had been arrested by the CID in connection with the coal syndicate case on Tuesday, to judicial custody on Wednesday. The five officials are Katigara CO Manzor Elahi Borbhuyan, Silchar enforcement inspector Biswajit Bhattacherjee, assistant enforcement inspector Babul Manda, superintendent of tax (Silchar zone) Sajal Das and inspector of tax (Silchar) Anjan Jyoti Bora.
According to CID sources, on March 9, 2018 CID sleuths seized four overloaded coal-laden trucks near Digharkhal check-gate while going without having to pay GST cess and fine for overload. CID suspects that coal-laden trucks from Meghalaya go to Bangladesh via Sutarkandi with an understanding with a section of government officials in Assam.   
The CID did register a case (6/2018) in connection with alleged coal syndicate in the State. All the five filed their bail plea to the court on Wednesday. The court is to hear their plea on April 25. Meanwhile, the CID grilled a superintendent of tax Saurav Kumar Das in connection with the coal syndicate case.
