'Collective responsibility key for creating public awareness on child labour'

Dibrugarh, June13: An awareness meeting on World Day against Child Labour, under the initiative of District Labour Department and in collaboration with the district administration was organized at the conference hall of tiol Health Mission on Sunday.

Notably, the key slogan of this year’s World Day against Child Labour was ‘Shishu Shramik Horborah Bondho Korok’ (Stop Illegal Trafficking of Child Labour).

In the meeting which was chaired by Additiol Deputy Commissioner, Anjanbh Chaliha, the Principal of Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dr. Ratan Kotoki, while laying stress on the importance of child psychology, underlined the point of sustaining the educatiol rights of every child for creation of a disciplined society. Later, Additiol Superintendent of Police, Surajit Singh, in his deliberation, elucidated his views on the different areas of the Child Labour Protection Act.

Moreover, Assistant Commissioner Himangshu Choudhury, pesident of Child Welfare Committee, Sewali Borbora, and president of Chambers of Commerce, Bhudev Phukan, while addressing the gathering, stated that the collective responsibility of every party, organization and NGO was the key for creating public awareness on child labour. Later, in his deliberation, the president of the awareness meeting, Additiol, Deputy Commissioner, Anjabh Chaliha, cited the lack of work approach among the elders in BPL families as the main reason behind growing cases of child labour. Chaliha said that media could play a big role in spreading awareness in this regard. Chaliha, while stating the act of child labour as a social stigma, called upon the people to contact Helpline Number- 1098, if incidence of anyone employing children as servants in their homes is perceived.

In a separate ceremony, the Principal of AMCH, Dr Ratan Kataky, administered oath to the gathered people for not employing children as child labourers. The children of Prero Children Home and Kalyan Ashram presented chorus in the meeting. Sports and games materials were distributed among the chidren of Prero Children Home, and prizes were given away to the winners of the art competition which was organized on the occasion.

With the objective of creating awareness on child labour, a procession was taken out by the Labour department, where children took part to raise consciousness among people against employing child labourers.

Earlier, in the meeting attended by the various government officials and representatives of various NGOs, the objectives of the meeting were laid down by Assistant Labor Commissioner, Pankaj Das.
