College student crushed to death by Army truck in Jorhat

Irate college students stage road blockade, demand punishment for Army truck driver

JORHAT, August 25: A speeding Indian Army vehicle crushed a student of CKB College to death in an accident near Mission Hospital, Jail Road in Jorhat on Tuesday.

The deceased, identified as Biraj Gogoi (20), was origilly from the Kakodonga area of Golaghat district. He was a degree second semester student. At the time of the accident, Biraj was seated as a pillion rider while his college friend Bedanta Bora was riding the ill-fated Scooty (AS 03 U 6865) when the army vehicle ran over the two-wheeler, killing Biraj on the spot. However, Bedanta Bora miraculously escaped with minor injuries and was admitted to JMCH.

A group of 100 students of the CKB College who gathered at the site of the accident immediately staged a road blockade demanding severe punishment to the army driver. However, the students were soon dispersed after the intervention of the police. But the students who were adamant, came down to the busy Baruah Chari-Ali area and again blocked the AT Road that connects the NH 37. Once again the police intervened and dispersed the agitating students peacefully without the use of force.

Not contained, the students made a fil push to block the MG road just in front of the Jorhat Sadar Police Station, bringing traffic to halt. It was filly after Additiol SP (Headquarter) Ripul Das had a one-to-one discussion with the students with an assurance to bring the culprit behind bars did the students filly lift the road blockade.

In the meantime, the police brought the Army vehicle and took the driver into preventive custody. However, during the initial scuffle some Indian Army personnel present in the vehicle also tried to attack jourlists of an electronic news channel. The vehicle has been identified to belong to the Rowriah-based Para Regiment bearing defense registration number 14D195438M.
