College Student Injured in Monkey Attack in Majuli,Assam

JORHAT, July 24: A degree first year student of Majuli College was injured seriously after she was chased and attacked by 7-8 marauding wild monkeys at Mekheli gaon, Kamalabari under Kamalabari PS in Majuli district on Monday. Police said that the college student, identified as Debashree Khound (19), had gone to the terrace of her house along with her sister to bring clothes that had been left out to dry. A group of stray monkeys chased her and while fleeing in fear, she fell from the staircase of about 10 feet- 11 feet and was seriously injured. She was rushed to Goromur Primary Health Centre, Majuli and was later taken to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital by a special ferry in a semi-conscious state. She had received injuries on her chest and back. Later, doctors at JMCH referred her to Guwahati for better treatment.

Recently, monkeys have been causing nuisance in the island district of Majuli. The forest department has been blamed for failing to find a solution to the problem. The monkeys have to be tranquilized and shifted from human habitat areas, said Kushal Dutta, a social activist.
