Committee seeks Home Ministry’s intervention

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT

Itagar, Mar 20: A delegation of Justice for Higio Gungtey Committee (JFHGC) on Saturday called on Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju and sought immediate intervention of his ministry into the assault case Higio Gungtey for speedy justice.

Gungtey, who hails from Aruchal Pradesh and is a fourth-semester student of Christ University, was allegedly beaten and forced to lick his rent house owner’s shoes for using excessive water in Bengaluru on March 6 last.

The house owner was identified as B Hemanth Kumar.

While submitting a seven-point memorandum to the Union Minister, the Committee also demanded police protection for Gungtey; immediate arrest of accused B Hemanth Kumar under IPC 307 (attempt to murder), IPC 153(C) for racial discrimition and IPC 509 for using derogatory words against women.

The Committee further demanded immediate implementation of “Bezbaruah Committee” recommendation.

“It is a clear case of racial attack on North East people in general and Aruchal in particular”, the Committee said and threatened to launch a mass protest rally if the Kartaka Government fails to arrest the accused within two days.

Rijiju has assured the delegation that he and his department would look into the case, adding that his ministry is also working to create mass awareness against racial discrimition among the masses, informed Committee Chairman Rikar Dini.
