Bongaigaon, September 8: Four Railway staff members, including one female Junior Engineer, were seriously injured in an accident at the New Bongaigaon Railway Workshop on Tuesday.

The injured are Satyen Ray (38), Technician II, Jyotish Singha, (50), Technician II, Pradip Das, Senior Technician, and Susmita Dey Mondol (27), Junior Engineer. They were testing an AC compressor when it burst. All four were immediately taken to a private nursing home for treatment. Among them, Jyotish Singha was referred to GNRC Hospital in Guwahati as his condition was critical.

Pabitra Barman, an employee of New Bongaigaon Workshop, said that the accident took place as safety measures had not been taken. “During such risky work in the Railway workshop, safety of the staff is overlooked by the administrator,” he alleged.

Rakhal Das Gupta, president of All India Railwaymen’s Federation immediately had a discussion with the Railway administration and demanded that the administration should bear the cost for the medical treatment of the injured employees. “The railway administration has agreed to bear the cost of the medical treatment,” said Dilip Chakraborty, joint general secretary of NFRMU. Meanwhile, NFRMU has demanded for a high-level enquiry into the mishap.
