Concern over abductions

FROM A REPORTER
Shillong, July 13: The State Co-ordition Committee of Coal Owners, Miners & Dealers Forum (SCCCOMDF), along with the constituent unit, the Meghalaya Mine Owners & Exporters Association, have expressed serious concern over the increasing incidents of abductions and overall prevailing law-and-order situation in South West Khasi Hills district.
“Abductions perpetrated by unknown miscreants, presumably Bangladeshis who cross over from the other side of the intertiol border, have sent shivers down the spine of many in the entire district, especially among the residents in the border areas who now have to spend sleepless nights for fear of being abducted,” SCCCOMDF chairman Sonny L Khyriem said in a statement issued here on Thursday.
He stated that the growing incidents of abductions have severely affected the local populace, particularly those who are either directly or indirectly involved in the coal trade business. To buttress his point, he referred to the recent case of kidpping of one Ricky Nongtnger of Umsur village in Nongjri area of South West Khasi Hills on the 8th July.  “The border areas in the South West Khasi Hills are almost fully fenced, but yet the intruders mage to frequently infiltrate into the State, which is a matter of serious concern,” he added.
