Concern over abysmal condition of market

SHILLONG, Oct 19: Expressing concern over the unclean and smelly condition of one of the oldest markets in the State, Iweduh market, Sonryngkham MDC Pyniaid Sing Syiem today moved a resolution requesting the Executive Committee (EC) to take immediate remedial measures to clean the market.

“I feel it is high time that the Executive Committee should allocate some funds for the purpose of cleaning the market and the Council should also check the illicit liquor sale inside the market with has caused many inconveniences to the general public,” Syiem said.

He further said the KHADC should take necessary actions against those people who have converted the market into a residential market which has become an eye sour for many.

In reply to the resolution moved by the HSPDP MDC, H Lyngdoh , EM in-charge of market, said, “We have inspected the market in previous months and it is true that the market is not very clean and even the roof tops of various shops inside the market is unclean.”

He added, “If there is rain the unclean water from the roof tops might fall in places where people move and walk in the market and this will affect the health of the shop goers.”

He said the Council in this regard has directed the Hima Mylliem to take up initiative concerning the cleanliness of the market.

“It’s the duty of the Hima to look into these things and we have also send letters to them concerning the subject matter but we don’t know why the Hima is slow to react even though they have their own tax collection to clean the market,” he said.

He informed that the Council has also sent a project engineers to inspect the places with is in dire need for intervention of the KHADC especially the entry and exit point of the market. Lyngdoh, however, assured that in the coming months there will be change in the market.
