Concern over encroachment of government lands in Sivasagar district

From a Correspondent

JOYSAGAR, Feb 6: While Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal is talking tough on the issue of encroachment of government land and has said that the government will evict encroachers from government land as per law, the Sivasagar district administration still remains silent and does not seem taking necessary steps to stop encroachment of government land or to take up eviction drives against such illegal encroachers.

Earlier, former Sivasagar DC SS Meekshi Sundaram had taken an initiative called Green Sivasagar, Clean Sivasagar. The district administration had taken up many eviction drives against suspected government land encroachers around the district. Now, when many of the historic places, government and railway undertaking land and tural wetlands have been illegally occupied by people, the district administration allegedly seems to take no legal steps against this.

Already, Sivasagar’s tural waterways like Jamu, Moribill, Mori-Dikhow and Era Suti have been illegally encroached upon due to which residents are facing a lot of problems. In the rainy season artificial floods wreak havoc. Unless the district administration takes necessary steps against such illegal encroachers, the problem of artificial flood will only increase during the rainy season.
