Concern over growing mece of child labour in Goalpara

Goalpara, June 13: Supported by the Goalpara district administration, the district Sarva Shiksha Mission (SSA) on Monday organized a one-day workshop on ‘child labour issues in the wake of ethnic conflict and tural calamities’ at the Phani Sarma Bhavan of the town. Presided over by Omar Sharif, ADC, in presence of Amir Hussain, Inspector of Schools-cum-Mission Coorditor, SSA, the meeting had a threadbare discussion on the subject with inputs from several resource persons like Dipti Phukan, DCPO, MK Das, Labour Officer, Dilip Kr. th, president, District Press Club.

Delivering lecture on the occasion, Amir Hussain focused on the condition of the children in difficult situations and especially in ethnic violence. He further appealed to citizens to contribute whatever little they could towards minimizing the problem. Dilip Kr. th explained the media’s role and urged the administration to take action in the cases  brought forward by the media. Besides child labour, Sofikul Ahmed, chairperson, CWC, discussed the challenges like trafficking and child abuse faced by the children.

Omar Sharif expressed grave concern that child labour had become a serious issue in the district. “We are supposed to find out the pockets and take immediate measures to stop it,” he said. Others who also spoke in the meeting were Anil Basfor, secretary DLSA, Manoj Gohain and Rofikul Islam, SSA, officers. The meeting was participated by several local schools where the inmates of the Dudhnoi RSTC children presented various folk dances.
