Concern over increasing road mishaps in Margherita

MARGHERITA, June 17: The people of Margherita region for many years have been witnessing major road accidents involving dumpers and trucks laden with coal, sand, timber and boulders. On Friday afternoon a major accident occurred at NH 38  Baragolai NEFA Tea Factory when a full-loaded coal truck collided with an auto-rickshaw full of passengers. All the passengers were seriously injured. According to sources, a fully-loaded coal truck bearing registration number UP 21 AN 3645 collided with an auto carrying passengers, bearing registration number AS 23 G 2404. All three passengers, including the driver, was seriously injured and admitted at Margherita Hospital and then the doctors referred him to Assam Medical College and Hospital Dibrugarh. Salil Neog, president of Asom Jatiyotabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad Margherita Regiol Committee, said that road accidents had become common in Margherita region. Many vehicles, mainly trucks and dumpers, ply on Margherita roads but the drivers are usually drunk.
Traffic point should immediately be set upon at Margherita town and strict action should be taken against those drivers, said Salil Neog.
