DHEMAJI, Dec 28: The illegal occupants of the Brahmaputra char areas of Dhemaji district allegedly created an unwanted situation for livestock keepers of the area. The silent role of district administration has been resented.

The livestock keepers have been dwelling in the Brahmaputra char areas of Dhemaji and Dibrugarh districts since time immemorial. They supply milk to the people of both the districts. The livestock dwellers have developed an array of strategies for the sustaible use of these areas. Along with cattle, they grow some Rabi crops in the season. A peaceful situation prevailed in the area. But now it has been noticed that some allegedly illegal occupants have moved to the area and started construction of buildings of semi-permanent ture and dug tube wells here and there and started cultivation which has created a lot of problems for the origil dwellers. These people of dubious ture were sent by some powerful men for occupation of the land which disturbs the cattle while grazing, people alleged.

Scuffle takes place very often which may create unwanted situation at any time, a char dweller stated. The district administration has been urged by the people of Dhemaji to visit the place and study the situation properly before the problem aggravates. The Government of Assam might have sent some landless people to settle in the char areas but it is important to note that along with the real landless people, some uuthorized persons may take advantage, a senior citizen of the area said.
