FROM A CORRESPONDENT

GAON (HAIBORGAON), July 8: Politics is full of surprises. In an interesting development, the gaon district BJP led by newly appointed Central Railway (State) Minister Rajen Gohain faced a defeat in the race to capture the post of chairman of the gaon Zila Parishad in the hands of the Congress.  In the general meeting of the gaon Zila Parishad held at the conference hall of the Parishad on Friday on the selection of chairman of the Parishad, Congress candidate Haidar Ali obtained 24 votes compared to BJP candidate Ranumai Terangpi who only bagged 14 votes. On the other hand, AIUDF supported candidate Dhaniram Thouseng got only 2 votes.  After the resigtion of former chairman of the gaon Zila Parishad Nurul Hoda who became MLA from Rupahihat constituency in the recent Assembly polls, the gaon district BJP led by senior leader and newly appointed Central Railway (State) Minister Rajen Gohain launched a massive drive to stch the rule of the Zila Parishad from the possession of the Congress. But this loss dealt a major blow to the district BJP.  Various sections of the society alleged that the BJP has failed to bag the post of chairman of the Zila Parishad due to its poor political initiatives.
