'Congress cautions administration on family tree verification'

 From Our Special Correspondent

SILCHAR, March 24: An uneasy situation prevails across the three districts of Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi in respect of verification of family tree related to the ongoing NRC update. In a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar on Friday, Silchar District Congress Committee has projected a number of cases where the applicants for NRC have been subjected to harassment with no authority around to look into it. Pradip Kumar Dey, president of the district committee, who led the delegation of Congress leaders, said he himself was asked to report with his wife at Kalkalighat on Tripura border for her verification of parental linkage.
Now, he has been asked to report at Rangirghat village panchayat in Soi block for verification of his own linkage. Surprised at these notices, Dey said he and his wife do not have any relations or relatives either at Kalkalighat or Rangirghat. There is no plausible explation from any NRC authority about this kind of anomaly. The convenient way to understand is the erroneous feedback of data by the operators in the system. This has generated a chaotic situation across the valley and the persons receiving the notices are not only confused but also confounded.
Congress district president who was accompanied by Ajit Singh, former minister, Rajdeep Goala, MLA Lakhipur, Partha Ranjan Chakraborty, spokesperson of the party, Sujan Dutta, Sanjeev Roy and others, said all want a free, fair and error free NRC, and not harassment for no fault of any individual. Ajit Singh and Rajdeep Goala raised the assurance given by Prateek Hajela, NRC state coorditor, to the effect that no body from this valley would have to go outside for verification. Video conferencing for all individuals served with such notices would be arranged within their own district. The Deputy Commissioner was made to understand that this assurance has turned out to be a hoax.
Congress leaders expressing serious concern at the development which will continue until the process of verification is over wanted the intervention of competent higher authorities in the matter in order to put an end to the error in data entry, resulting in the endless harassment of Indian citizens. Data entry is a serious matter which, according to them, is perhaps handled by inexperienced and incompetent hands. If this continues, it is apprehended if the fil publication of NRC will be at all error free, pointed out the Congress leaders. They cautioned if no corrective measures are taken, Congress will not desist from taking to streets to voice the resentment and anger of people.
