SILCHAR, Aug 27: It is perhaps the season to desert one’s paterl party and switch over to another. There is nothing like turncoat politician. There are instances in the political history of the country when a leader has changed his colour, of course, political. How can Samarjit Haflongbar, a leader of eminence and influence of Dima Hasao District, be different. Maintaining the tradition, he switched over from Congress to join BJP on last Wednesday.

At a function organized in this connection in the BJP district headquarters on the day, Samarjit Haflongbar was welcomed by B B Hajger, president of the saffron party, and Bani Kemprai, vice-president. He was welcomed with the customary ceremony. When asked about the reason for joining BJP, he said the attitude and style of functioning of Congress leaders during the last one year had pained him. He was influenced by the ideals and ideology of BJP and decided to become a member of the party.

Samarjit Haflongbar was the former chief executive officer of Dima Hasao Autonomous District Council and also an MLA. On May 19, 2007, he left Autonomous State Demand Committee, a political party, fighting for the cause of an independent state comprising North Cachar Hills and Karbi Anglong to join Congress. After his association with Congress for long 8 years, he decided ultimately to join BJP.
