Congress leaders oppose move to scrap Art 244(A)

Haflong, Jan 17: To discuss the issue of BJP-led Assam Government’s proposal to scrap Article 244 (A) of the Constitution of India, the Dima Hasao DCC (I) organized a one-day convention of Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong Congress leaders at Rajiv Bhavan here at Haflong on Wednesday. The leaders from the both the hills district of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao participated in the discussion which lasted for several hours. They equivocally opposed the scrapping of 244(A) with strong words while criticizing the BJP-led Government of India and also the Government of Assam for not taking the leaders of the Opposition in confidence. They termed the BJP led government’s attitude as anti-tribal and an attempt to push the tribal people backward.

Talking to media persons, Nirmal Langthasa, president of Dima Hasao DCC (I), said Article 244(A) was not at all an election issue for the Congress, it was the BJP who promised to create separate state before the election but was now scrapping the Article 244 (A), which was not a political issue but a constitutiol crisis. The discussion was attended by Samsom Ingti, APCC secreteary, Mili Teronpi, vice-chairperson, Tribal Dept APCC, Niren Maibangsa, MCC President Dhonsiri , Rangsi Hanse, MCC Pre Lumbajang, Rongbong Terang, President Longsomepi  BCC  Sanjib Teron MCC President Phuloni , Nirmal Langthasa, president, Dima Hasao DCC(I), Kalijay Sengyung and Mayan Kemprai. The convention also adopted few resolutions on the future course of action which will be disclosed soon.
