FROM A REPORTER

SHILLONG, Nov 28: The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) today said that the party supports the move initiated by the NDA government led by Prime Minister rendra Modi to demonetize Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 currency notes. But it opposes the timing and preparedness of the central government in implementing the project.

The State Congress party today organised a protest demonstration against the demonetization of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 currency notes by the central government at Dhankheti, Shillong. Members of the congress party were seen holding placards and shouting anti-Modi slogans.

Speaking to reporters at the protest site, MPCC president DD Lapang said, “This idea which has been adopted and implemented by the Prime Minister is not a bad idea because all of us want black money to be uprooted, however the timing and readiness of the government to carry out the task clearly shows the immaturity in government in implementing such an important and huge schemes.”

He added, “We oppose the style, timing and unpreparedness of the NDA government after implementing the demobilization of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 currency notes with has hit hard on the daily functioning and activities of the poor people especially daily wage earners.”

Lapang observed that upon looking at the ground reality of the impact of the demonization it was found that many businesses have run dry and one of the oldest and biggest market in the state Iewduh has been greatly affected.

He further said that parents are also facing difficulties in paying exams and admission fees due to the move of the central government to make Rs. 500 and Rs.1000 notes as non legal tender.  “We appeal to all likeminded people to take this issue seriously without having any intention to gain political mileage and to condemn the manner and procedure adopted by the central government under the leadership of the Prime Minister,” he said.

Pointing out that Modi had assured the people of the country during his campaign that when he becomes the prime minister of the country, he will bring back all the black money stashed away in foreign bank accounts, “The Prime Minister had assured the people of the country that once black money from abroad is brought it will be allotted to every citizen of India. However till today we have not seen any movement form the NDA government to materialize their assurance.”
