Congress to strengthen party in State

FROM A REPORTER

SHILLONG, May 4: With an aim to strengthen the grassroots level of the party, the Congress is targeting to enrol 3 lakh members in the State within 11 days even as it vows to fight the alleged move of the BJP to remove special status from the Northeast region.  AICC Returning Officer of Meghalaya JD Seelam told newsmen on Monday: “We want to have an enrolment of 3 lakh members in Meghalaya as we want to rebuild our party from the grassroots level.”

JD Seelam said, “From the three lakh, 1.50 lakh have been enrolled and we want to complete the process by May 15,” while adding, “He has instructed all MLAs/MDCs to play their role in the process.”

He also alleged that the BJP is trying to take away the cultural and commul harmony in the North East and urged the people of Meghalaya and North East not to allow or tolerate such forces. He further alleged that the BJP, in its manifesto, talked about employment and progress which are all just illusions. “What the BJP is saying is totally different from what they are actually doing by trying to remove the special status from the North East region,” Seelam said. Meanwhile, the AICC PRO said that 1/3rd of the office bearers of the party at different levels should be occupied by women.
