From a Reporter
SHILLONG, Oct 30: Congress MDC of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) PT Sawkmie on Monday exuded confidence said that the Congress party would win the upcoming 2018 Assembly elections scheduled next year.
Speaking to reporters in the city, Sawkmie said the people of Meghalaya have confidence on the Congress, which is the oldest party in the country.
The member of the district council is also scheduled to contest the upcoming Assembly elections on a Congress ticket from Mawlai constituency.
When asked about the performance of the present MLA of Mawlai constituency, Sawkmie said, “I cannot comment on his performance. The people of the constituency are in a better position to comment on that.”
Asked on the present requirements of the constituency, he said, “The prime need of the people of Mawlai is proper drinking water supply as people there are facing hardship due to the absence of adequate and proper drinking water supply facilities.”
He said the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department has tried its best to provide adequate supply of water in Mawlai, but because of the increase in population in the area, the department has been uble to meet the demand.
He, however, said the PHE department has prepared a new scheme that will benefit the people of Mawlai.
Responding to a question on whether there will be an impact on the party in the upcoming elections as a few of its senior leaders have deserted the Congress, he said, “Whatever the reason may be for their desertion, I’m optimistic that the Congress party will come back to power.”
Asked on the emergence of the tiol People’s Party (NPP) in Meghalaya, Sawkmie said, “NPP is not a very old party and the people do not have much confidence on the party.”
On the BJP, the Congress MDC said, “I have not seen any major impact done by the BJP in the entire State because of the party’s anti people policy across the country. Besides, the people of Meghalaya have seen that the policies pursued by the BJP are not in their favour, especially the demonetization, GST, etc.”
