SHILLONG, June 23: Ruling congress party in Meghalaya has downplayed the interl bickering that plaque the grass roots workers of the Chokpot, a constituency of South Garo Hills district that is going for a by-poll on June 27. While it is known fact (as reported in The Sentinel) that the official party nominee Bluebell R. Sangma was given a party ticket barely a month after she joined the party, President of the Meghalya Pradesh Congress Committee D.D Lapang told the media on Tuesday that, “As directed by high command to look at the win ability factor, the party has nomited her.”

“There might be senior members of the party, but that does not mean that we should back a losing horse”, stated Lapang. He denied that the a few section of State party leadership imposed the decision upon the District Congress Committee (DCC) and the Block Congress Committee (BCC) to accept Bluebell S Sangma nomition as the party candidate for the Chokpot bye polls.  It is fairly known that Bluebell S Sangma, the widow of the then NCP legislator joined the Congress on May this year at Tura Town, West Garo Hills without the knowledge of many prominent senior members. But Lapang said that the decision to accept her as a member and to choose her as a party official candidate is after due consultations with the workers at the grass root level.

The MPCC President also said that the official candidate has a good chance of bagging the seat due to the party vote bank. Bluebell S sangma contested on the NCP ticket during the last general election and secured the fourth position with barely 1500 votes.
