Conrad's nomition as GHADC member likely to be delayed

SHILLONG, Dec 27: The wait prolongs for tiol People’s Party (NPP) leader and former Meghalaya Fince Minister, Conrad Sangma’s appointment as the nomited Member of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).

With its rival the Congress at the helm of affairs at the state, Conrad’s nomition seems to be only further delayed.

It may be noted, that it was on November 2 this year that the me of Conrad was cleared by the Executive Committee (EC) of the GHADC and the next day it was forwarded to the District Council Affairs department.

Earlier, Chief Minister, Dr Mukul Sangma had made it amply clear that, the recommendation of the nomited Members of District Councils (MDCs) in the autonomous district councils will be a “political decision”. It is no hidden secret that Dr Sangma and Conrad have no lost between them and the Chief Minister would not want to give a political edge to his rival by approving the recommendation of the EC.

It may be mentioned that unlike in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), where the state government recommends the me of the nomited member, in the GHADC the recommendation of the EC is enough.

Recently, when asked on the status of his nomition as the nomited member of GHADC, Conrad had said, “The processes have to be followed. We are allowing the government to take their time.”

The NPP-led Garo Hills Progressive Alliance has projected Conrad as the CEM of GHADC. The approval of Conrad as nomited member by the District Council Affairs department will eble him to take over the leadership of the Council from the present CEM Deng Sangma.
