Conservationist Jorjo Tana Gets Threat From ‘Timber Mafia’

ITANAGAR: Jorjo Tana, a man who has worked for 3 years for the protection of forest and against illegal logging in the State, said that his life is in danger as the ‘timber mafia’ has threatened him with dire consequences if he did not stop raising his voice against illegal logging.

Tana had earlier filed a petition in the National Green Tribunal (NGT) seeking a halt to the large-scale illegal logging that is practiced in the Papum Reserve Forest (PRF), Seijosa and Dissing Paso circle of Khelong Forest Division, Arunachal Pradesh. He has also filed a complaint against the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Kelong Forest Division and an FIR against the Forest department.

Addressing the media persons here at Arunachal Press Club (APC) on Tuesday, Tana informed deforestation is spread throughout Tawang, Papumpare, Pasighat, Changlang and Pakke Kesang districts. Tana also said the use of a mechanized chainsaw to cut the timber logs has affected on Hornbill nests in the area. Tana also alleged that under the permission of the DFO, Kelong, many people from the outside of State has been given permits for mining in Arunachal Pradesh.
