Construction of Border Haats on hold, says CM

SHILLONG, Sept 14: Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma today informed the Meghalaya assembly that the construction of the new border haats in the state could not be started since the join inspection of the haats sites with the Bangladeshi officials is yet to be conducted.

Replying during the Question Hour, Dr. Sangma said that the Commerce and Industries department through the Deputy Commissioners’ office of the respective districts have requested its counterpart in Bangladesh for a joint inspection of the border haats sites.

“However, the counterpart in Bangladesh has been repeatedly postponing the dates of inspection for which the construction could not be taken up,” the Chief Minister said.

“The matter has been brought to the notice of the Government of India and the same has assured to resolve the matter with its counterpart in Bangladesh,” Dr. Sangma added.

He also informed that the proposed border haats will be set up in Bholaganj and Ryngku (East Khasi Hills), likata (South West Khasi Hills) and Sibbari (South Garo Hills).
