Consumer awareness programme conducted

Shillong, March 29: With an aim to educate and spread awareness regarding the rights of consumers among the students of the university, the Department of Social Work of Martin Luther Christian University on Thursday organized a campaign on Consumer Rights on the theme, “Emerging Digital Markets: Issues and Challenges in Consumer Protection”.

The campaign was sponsored by the office of the Deputy Commissioner (Supply) of East Khasi Hills district in Meghalaya.

The department, during the campaign, conducted a survey focusing on online shopping among consumers. The findings highlighted that most consumers face challenges and lack awareness regarding online purchase.

An essay and speech competitions were also held earlier in the day relating to the theme. The students of the Department of Social Work also performed a play on the challenges and the unreliability of digital consumerism.

Speaking during the programme, Dean, Education Outreach, Dr (Ms) Iwamon WJ Laloo spoke about the importance and need to educate themselves with the laws and rights of the consumers. She added that with the onset and immediate rise of digital consumerism, knowledge and awareness about the market and its rules and regulations should be followed, and also one has to be fully aware of the risks.
