Dibrugarh, Feb 28: A tribute paying ceremony was organized by Disharee – a socio-cultural organization– to mark the demise of the founder secretary of Disharee as well as noted social worker, Shankhad Ghosh, at its premises on Sunday. Members of many social and cultural organizations, distinguished persolities and general public of the region attended the event to pay their respects to the departed soul.

The ceremony started with noted figure Nirupama Sor and wife of the deceased, Mridula Ghosh garlanding a portrait of Ghosh. That was followed by offering of flowers to the picture by Dr. Saikat Patra and Dr. Ahmedullah Khan. Addressing the gathering, distinguished poet, Subir Chowdhary gave a vivid account of the notable works and achievements of Ghosh. He held that Ghosh was the pioneer of blood dotion and workshops for children  in Dibrugarh, and selflessly worked for the betterment of the downtrodden during his long stint of 37 years with Disharee.

During the riotous times prevailing in Assam in the 1980s, Ghosh started campaigning against the evils of commulism with the help of songs and street plays. He was quite instrumental in maintaining inter-faith harmony among the people of the region during that volatile phase, Chowdhary asserted. Various persolities as well as organizations, including Dr. Patra, Salil Guha Mazumder of India Club, Islamic Study Centre, Dibaru Sahitya Sabha, social worker, Radhamabiv Mazumder, Jivan Jyoti Dowerah of Commercial Representatives and Alak Sarkar of Disharee, also spoke on the rich contributions of Ghosh to the society and cultural fabric of the town and pledged to walk down the path shown by him.
