Convention on problems of senior citizens held

KOKRAJHAR, Sept 19: Hundreds of senior citizens of Kokrajhar district gathered at Basic Training Centre (BTC) auditorium hall in the first ever special convention organized in Kokrajhar on Saturday to discuss the issues and demands of senior citizens.

Gauri Sangkhar Brahma, a retired teacher and senior citizen of Kokrajhar, chaired the session and discussed thoroughly issues related to senior citizens’ uplift as well social development.

Madhav Prasad Sarma, Deputy Commissioner, Kokrajhar graced the convention as chief guest. Sarma said that the district administration had been taking steps to provide facilities to senior citizens as per government norms. He said that senior citizens should be given proper respect and honour in society and the district administration would pay kind attention to the needs of the senior citizens.

Dr Mangalsingh Hazowary, retired Principal of Kokrajhar CTE and organizer of the session, said that the special convention was organized here in Kokrajhar under the guidelines of the Governor of Assam PB Acharya to discuss about social integration where senior citizens across the district participated and shared their views about uplift of the senior citizens. He demanded separate counter and facility for the senior citizens while applying for train, bus tickets during travelling.

Among others, Dr Kameswar Brahma, president of Bodo Sahitya Sabha was also present in the occasion. A new committee of Kokrajhar district unit of the Senior Citizens’ Association was formed in the session with Mangalsingh Hazowary as president and Dinesh Uppadhya as secretary along with 21 executive members.
