Cooperative societies in Sivasagar yet to get Rs 7 crore from government

Joysagar, March 15: The Public Distribution System (PDS) under the Food and Civil Supply Department, Government of Assam, in Sivasagar district has hit a roadblock. Irregularities in the PDS are allegedly taking place due to the negligence on the part of the Assam Government, alleged some cooperative members of Sivasagar district. There are 22 cooperative societies in Sivasagar district. These cooperative societies generally collect the items like rice, sugar and kerosene oil from Central Government affiliated firms. After collection of PDS items, these are distributed through the fair price shops.
But in the process of collection of PDS items, the respective cooperative societies are to be paid by the government duly. But in Sivasagar district, it has come to light that the government authorities are not paying the co-operative societies since the past 16-17 months. The 22 cooperative societies of Sivasagar are yet to get Rs 7 crore from the government. The cooperative societies recently took a decision not to serve people by distributing PDS items from the month of April till the Assam Government pays the Rs 7 crore due to the cooperative societies.
