Corruption at the grassroots to be the main electoral issue

Panchayat poll

From a Correspondent

Joysagar, March 19: Corruption in grassroots level will be the main electoral issue in the upcoming panchayat election. Most of the gaon panchayats in the State are still occupied by Congress party members and it is alleged that in the case of rural development works as well as MGNREGA jobs, Congress public representatives had misused and misappropriated the development funds provided by the Central Government throughout the State. The village-level welfare and development works have not been done properly and most of the government welfare schemes were not implemented.

The village local self-government idea and objectives could not achieve its logical goal due to alleged massive corruption in the panchayat level by the elected public representatives and this has left the voters dissatisfied. Therefore, grassroots-level corruption will definitely be a big issue in the upcoming gaon panchayat election likely to be held in April this year.

Meanwhile, ahead of the polls, various political parties seem busy in publicity and poll campaign. The ruling BJP this time is working hard for a grand victory and the party has focused on the corruption issue. In Sivasagar, most of the panchayat seats are occupied by the Congress. Meanwhile, the regiol party Asom Ga Parishad (AGP) has also geared up the poll campaign throughout the district. AGP this time will be fighting alone, without any seat sharing with other political parties. Some other political parties like CPI, Asom Sangrami Mancha and RJD are also actively involved in poll campaign.

In Sivasagar, CPI has also a large number of supporters and many villagers are cooperating with the party. The Asom Sangrami Mancha, a political party basically formed by the youth of the district, has also prepared to fight the upcoming poll and the party’s main electoral promise is weeding up corruption. Out of 22 gaon panchayats in Sivasagar, Congress is occupying 18 panchayats. The Congress is working hard to hold on to those seats.
