Country is not prepared to go cashless, says Tripura minister

Agartala, Dec 7 : The Fince minister of Tripura Bhanu Lal Saha feels introduction of cashless system in our economy will be good for the society but lamented that the over enthusiasm of the Centre has turned out to be a disaster as the country is not prepared for that.

‘We must consider if people are prepared to accept a new system before introducing it’, he said while talking to the reporters in the state secretariat. Citing difficulties for introducing the cashless system he said banks has not reached into a large area of our country and vast number of people not yet have a bank account. How they will transact their daily needs’, he questioned. He said cashless society sounds nice and will be good for the society if implemented but how much it is possible in our country must be explored first. He drew attention to the pensioners, many of whom can’t read newspaper and said how they will transect through their mobile phone.

The PWD minister Badal Choudhury, who earlier held the fiance portfolio also came down heavily against the Centre’s move to transform our country into a cashless society. ‘It is a big attack on our society’, he said while addressing a meeting at Belonia. He said due to demonetization people are facing serious problem in the rural areas while going to market to collect their daily requirements of fish, vegetable and other items.

While the ministers are critical about the effects of demonetization and Prime Minister’s dream for a cashless society the banks are trying hard to normalise the situation in the state. A spokesman of the bank said altogether new currency note valued Rs 1639 crore has come to Tripura in five instalments since the Prime Minister announced demonetization and one more is expected shortly. ‘After that the situation will be normal and money will be available in all the ATM’s’, he said.
