CPI (M) finalizes candidates, gears up for Panchayat polls

SARUPATHAR: While BJP and Congress are yet to finalize the candidates to be fielded on seats in the upcoming Panchayat elections, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) has taken a clear lead in not only selecting the candidates but also launching the poll campaign. Although CPI-M is contesting in three seats in Dhansiri subdivision, there are some major panchayats where it is going to give a tough fight to rival candidates from BJP and Congress in the first phase of panchayat election.

CPI-M has fielded Sujit Bhaskar Gogoi for the post of anchalik panchayat member from 78 No. Pachim Sarupathar, Najajuri ward, Pratima Boro Bori for the post of gaon panchayat president from Pachim Sarupathar gaon panchayat and Jiten Rava for the post of 91 No. Madhyampur gaon panchayat president. Considering the fact that the BJP and Congress both are divided into factions in this subdivision, Sujit and the other two Left candidates can throw a challenge to both the major parties, sources said.

Overall, from Sarupathar assembly constituency, CPI-M has fielded very strong candidates. A neck-to-neck battle is on the cards. Meanwhile, Suren Gogoi, senior CPI-M party leader of Dhansiri subdivision, said this time the party has decided to contest the polls riding on major issues like price rise, unemployment and poor law-and-order situation prevailing in the subdivision. He alleged that both the Congress and BJP had failed to present the interests of farmers, labourers, employees, traders, women, youth and students and he also alleged that the Modi government was playing with the country’s defence by favouring some private companies.
