SHILLONG,  May 5: The Meghalaya unit of Communist Party of India (CPI) today adopted a resolution where it held the NGT ban on coal mining as having a detrimental effect on the economy of the State. The ban on coal mining clamped by the NGT has affected the economy of the State adversely as large number of people are rendered unemployed, adding “we hope the government will come up with altertive policy of rehabilitating the affected people,” the party said. The government should also strictly enforce a law to effectively control various mafias connected with the coal trade. The CPI stated that it is widely believed that the government is likely to amend the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India to empower the District Councils.
