CPI stages protest against killing of Gauri Lankesh

SIVASAGAR, Sept 18: Members of Communist Party of India (CPI), Sivasagar Zila Parishad staged a two-hour sit-in here in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Sivasagar condemning the murder of jourlist-activist Gauri Lankesh recently. The protesters demanded that Lankesh’s assailants be brought to book and exemplary punishment to the assailants who gunned down Lankesh outside her home on September 5.

Addressing the gathering, CPI Sivasagar district secretary and member of State council Kak Gogoi said, “Democracy in the country is under threat and we can see that space for free-thinking is shrinking. They want to silence the people who want to raise voice against atrocities.”

Those participating in the protest included CPI leader Jiten Borpatra Gohai, Krishak Sabha district secretary Madan Baruah, AIYF district president Anup Gogoi, AISF district secretary Juganta Pathak and AITUC district secretary Muhi Baruah who also condemned the killing of the renowned jourlist and appealed for unity against forces against free speech.
