Agartala, May 4: In a strategic move the CPI(M) led Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council has submitted a memorandum to the union home minister Rajth Singh demanding more power for all the ADC’s across Northeast.

Radha Charan Debbarma, Chief Executive Member of the TTAADC accompanied by executive member for education Rajendra Reang and the MP from East Tripura parliamentary constituency Jitendra Choudhury met the union minister at Delhi on Wednesday and submitted the memorandum.

Mr Singh gave a patient hearing to the delegation but refrained from giving any assurance. The delegates also requested the home minister to call a meeting of all the ADC’s of the region to solve the problem they are facing.

The demand assumed special significance in view of the BJP’s recent assurance that they will elevate the TTAADC to a regiol council which will have more autonomy. The party in power at the centre is campaigning in the tribal areas of Tripura with this pledge.

Talking to the reporters Radha Charan said the ADC act was passed in 1952 for the socio-economic development of the tribal. Since then the situation has changed and the act also need a total overhaul.

The memorandum demanded amendment of article 73 and 74 to give the village council’s power equivalent to the three tire panchyats. It also demanded inclusion of the TTAADC in article 275 and 280 of the constitution so that the ADC can get more fund from NITI Ayoug.

The delegates also demanded inclution of Kokborak, the language spoken by majority of tribals in Tripura, into 8th schedule of the constitution. The union minister informed the delegates that 67 such demands are pending before the ministry but said he will look after the matter.
