Crime against children increasing alarmingly in State: Report

SHILLONG, Dec 23: Meghalaya has seen a steady rise in the crime against children over the years. As per the data available with the state police, the total reported crime against children in the year 2002 was 23 which rose to 213 last year.

In the year 2003 the number of crime against children was 46, in the year 2004 it was 43, in the year 2005 it was 81, in the year 2006 it was 69, in 2007 it was 70, in 2008 the number came down to 62, in 2009 there were 83 reported cases of crime against children, in 2010 the figure touched the three-figure mark at 110, in 2011 it was 104, in 2012 it was 90 while in 2013 183 cases were reported.

According to data available with the Meghalaya police, in 2014, cases pending investigation from previous year (2013) was 337.

Moreover, it may be mentioned that in 2014, there were 478 cases pending trial at the end of the year.

The data also shows that there are 372 cases pending investigation at the end of the year. Also 485 cases went for trial during the year even as data shown by the Meghalaya police also indicates that last year it was able to convict in seven cases of against children. Meanwhile, in the current year crime reported against children in the state till the month of September is 179.
