Crime  against children on the rise in State

SHILLONG, April 26: The rising trend of crime committed against children in Meghalaya has not caused alarm bells to ring and the recent reports of various crimes committed against children, especially rape in various parts of State, only goes on to depict that the spate of criminal offence committed against children is rising.

However, according to a data received from the Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MSCPCR), it revealed that there are many cases concerning crimes against children which are still pending in the courts and there are also many new cases registered with the police.

So far this year, till the month of March, there are about 43 cases still pending with the courts and another 27 new cases have been registered with the police from across the State.

The highest cases of crime committed against children which are still pending in the courts is in Ri-Bhoi district as on February 2018 with 14 cases.

However, North Garo Hills has witnessed the highest number of new court cases of crimes committed against children which tally to 48 new cases from January to March, 2018.

The highest number of new cases registered with the police is also in North Garo Hills with 5 new cases registered on January and another 5 on February 2018.
