Custodial death triggers tension along Assam-Aruchal border

DIGBOI, Nov 25: Following the alleged custodial death of an Assamese youth Diganta Saikia of Kujupather village in Bordumsa in Tinsukia district on Saturdaymorning at Diyun Police Station during his custodial period for his alleged involvement in a series of motorcycle theft incidents in Diyun, the aggrieved students’ body, including the AASU, Gorkha, Sonowal Kachari, Adivasi and Deori community resorted to road protest here along the border police check post in Bordumsa.
 The agitated student bodies took to the street and raised several anti-Aruchal Police slogans and intensified their agitation by means of torching tyres along the Assam -Aruchal boundary gate.
 Demanding high-level judicial probe into the custodial death of the local youth, the agitators condemned the inhuman act of the police authority of Diyun in Changlang district, terming it as ‘ruthless and barbaric’. They opined that the youth who had surrendered himself  earlier in Assam Police Station in Bordumsa and later  handed over to Aruchal Police, could never commit suicide inside the police station, as informed by Diyun Police to the guardian of the victim.
 However, tense prevails along the border as hundreds of agitators are pouring in to intensify their agitation from the nearby places of Tinsukia district.
 Though adequate forces from Aruchal were being deployed to counter the situation erupting out of the sensatiol deadlock ,yet the agitators burnt down the bordering police check gate made of iron pool, beside suspending traffic movement. Sources informed that the police and civil administration in Assam had been corresponding with their Aruchal counterparts to this effect. 
 MLA of Margherita, Bhaskar Sharma extended one-time fincial aid of Rs 50, 000 to the members of the bereaved family, beside assuring to complete investigationwithin five days, while the administration was reported to have been insisting the Aruchal administration to carry out the post mortem in Assam, which till the filling of this report stands controversial. 
 The Aruchal officials involved in resolving the issue amicably in consultation with the demonstrators included ADC Bordumsa S Tayang, SDPO Miao, head gaon bura of Bordumsa, Sikhetang Singpho. Magistrate and SDPO from Margherita attended the demonstrators and have been initiating steps to bring the corpse, besides arranging for medical treatment to one of the injured accused under custody who was involved in the theft incident.
