CWJKC threatens protests under An Hazare's guidance

From a Correspondent

Dibrugarh, Feb 13: The Cantonment Ward Ja Kalyan Committee(CWJKC), as part of its demand to the Central Government to allocate land pattas to 234 families of the Cantonment Ward, has decided to stage protests under the guidance of Gandhian leader An Hazare, if land pattas are not allocated to the families within 10 days. The committee for long has been pressing on the government to allocate lands to the families who have been residing in that region since Independence.

Emphasizing the rightful claims of the residents of the ward, the president of CWJKC, Sunu Das, working president Dilip Singh and general secretary Imuddin Ahmed, in a press communiqué, stated that the committee had taken up the cause of the families with the Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, asking him to look into the matter of allocation of land pattas to the distressed families.

The Cantonment Ward has a amghar, Durga Mandir and Masjid from where taxes are also being collected by the local municipality and the whole region is fully electrified. Yet the families face the threat of eviction from their lands from time to time by the defense authorities. As such the 234 families have still got serious reservations as regards to their rights as citizens of the country.

The committee members along with the families have expressed unhappiness over the non-fulfilment of their demands. Even after 67 years of the country’s independence, the 234 families of the ward are still fighting for the rights over their lands.

The Cantonment Ward committee, viewing the eviction threats, has resolved to intensify their protests if the demands of the 234 families are not worked out and have called upon the Central and State Government to take appropriate steps.
