Darrang district administration organizes awareness meeting on NRC update

MANGALDAI, March 12: ‘A long felt dream is going to be transformed into reality. Let us create a new chapter in the history of Assam.’ With this slogan the district administration of Darrang organized the first community awareness meeting on the updation of the much awaited tiol Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam as per the direction of the Supreme Court of India. The meeting convened with a view to create awareness among people on the ongoing process of NRC update, was attended by a large number of people, including all the heads of the departments, members of the three-tier Panchayati Raj, social workers and media persons.

“The process of updation of the NRC has been based on the NRC of 1951, Citizenship Act of 1955 and Citizenship Rule of 2003. Already the NRC of 1951 and the electoral rolls published before the midnight of March 24 of 1971have been termed as the ‘Legacy Data’ and the mes of all the living citizens included in the ‘Legacy Data’ will be included in the NRC subject to establishment of their identity,” said Darrang Deputy Commissioner (DC) Manoj Kumar while explaining in details about the process of NRC update.

“For a smooth NRC update in the district, 80 NRC Sewa Kendras has been set up in various areas of the district and all the citizens of the concerned areas can examine the Legacy Data,” he added. He also appealed all sections of the society to extend all cooperation in preparation of an error free and transparent NRC in the greater interest of the country. In the meeting Project Director of Darrang DRDA Bibhash Modi and Election Officer Rahul Das explained in details about the updation process and replied the queries to raised by the people. Additiol Deputy Commissioners Dr. Bijoya Choudhury, Razvee Hussain, Bashree th, Chairperson of Darrang Zila Parishad Mohsi Khatun, CEO Ranjit Kalita were also present in the awareness meeting. Deputy Commissioner Manoj Kumar further informed that such awareness meetings would be arranged in village level so that all citizens could take part in the updation process.
