Darrang district facing acute shortage of senior administrative officers

From our Correspondent

MANGALDAI, January 31: While the government is busy in declaration of new districts and subdivisions in the State just ahead of the ensuing assembly polls only to gain political benefits, at the same time some of the trouble-torn and sensitive districts are facing acute shortage of senior administrative officers. On the other hand, some districts have more Additiol Deputy Commissioners than the required number.

As per sources, the total number of Additiol Deputy Commissioners in Kamrup (metro) is nine, 11 in Kamrup and seven in gaon district. At the same time, the district administration in Karbi Anglong district is functioning without a single Additiol Deputy Commissioner.

Though small in area, Darrang district is one of the sensitive districts in the State. But at present the district has only one Additiol Deputy Commissioner. Both the Additiol Deputy Commissioners - Dr Bijoya Chowdhury and Bashree th - were transferred on promotion and were accordingly released from the district on December 31. However, Bidyut Bikash Bhagawati on his promotion has joined as the lone Additiol Deputy Commissioner here only to be overburdened with the load of work, including NRC update. The post of the Sub Divisiol Officer (Sadar) has also been lying vacant since quite a long period. Sources said that Manisha Cheleng has been posted as Additiol Deputy Commissioner here in Darrang but she is yet to join.

Similarly, various government departments in Darrang district are also functioning without permanent heads. The revenue-earning department of Excise is functioning without a permanent Superintendent of Excise since June, 2014. Deputy Superintendent of Excise in Udalguri district Jaganth Bora has been functioning as the officiating Superintendent of Excise in both the districts of Udalguri and Darrang. The post of Deputy Superintendent of Excise in Darrang district is also lying vacant. The Health department too is functioning without the Joint Director of Health Services. The important department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs in Darrang district is also functioning without the Deputy Director. At present an officer in the rank of Superintendent is looking after the affairs of the department.
