Darrang Police busts gamblers' den, seizes Rs 2.38 lakh

MANGALDAI, April 11: Darrang Police seized an amount of Rs 2,38,330 in cash from a gamblers’ den and arrested four notorious gamblers. Acting on a tip-off, a team of police led by the newly-joined Deputy Superintendent of Police (HQ), Amit Hojai, with assistance of Kharupetia Police, on the evening of April 10 conducted a sudden raid at the gamblers’ den at Kharupetia and arrested four gamblers, Ejar Ali of Sherpur, Omar Ali and Abdul Ali of Dhula and Mozammil Hoque of Kharupetia. The police also seized a Maruti Alto car (AS 13 G 0397) along with the playing cards.

 Sreejith Thiraviam, an officer of Indian Police Service, since his joining in Darrang district as the Superintendent of Police, has been taking a tough stand against gambling, illicit liquor and drugs in the district. Few days back the police had arrested one Veteriry Assistant Surgeon while gambling. The post of Deputy Superintendent of Police (HQ) was lying vacant since January 31 as the Home department. Filly, the Home department vide a notification posted Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSB) Amit Hojai as the new Deputy Superintendent of Police (HQ) and accordingly Amit Hojai joined duty on April 11 and on that day he led a successful operation against the anti-social elements and recovered the huge amount from the gamblers.
