Guwahati, March 27: The death sentence of a serial-murderer has been commuted to life imprisonment by President Prab Mukherjee. Following the Union Home Ministry’s opinion advising a lenient view, the President is learnt to have commuted the sentence awarded to Man Bahadur Dewan. Dewan, a resident of Dibrugarh in Assam, was sentenced to death for killing his wife Gauri and two minor sons Rajib and Kajib in September 2002. He had also killed one of his neighbours and surrendered before the police. The President had earlier rejected mercy petitions of 22 death-row convicts, including Yakub Menon and Nithari serial rape and murder convict Surender Koli.
