Declare NE floods, erosion as tiol calamity'

Itagar, June 4: Aruchal Pradesh Speaker Wangki Lowang has asked the centre to declare the issue of floods and soil erosion in Northeast India as tiol calamity.

He said this at the 15th annual conference of Northeast Region Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (NERCPA) which was held from May 30 to June 2 last at Agartala, a delayed official release informed here today.

The conference was iugurated by Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan.

This year NERCPA had selected soil erosion in Northeast India and its impact on local populace and how political intervention could help resolves it as one of the topics. The other point for discussion was strengthening of NERCPA for further development of Northeast region states.

Representatives from all the Northeastern states including Sikkim attended the conference. The delegations from Aruchal Pradesh headed by Wangki Lowang, Speaker Legislative Assembly included Parliamentary Secretary Tax & Excise Zingnu mchoom, MLA Tesam Pongte along with senior officials, the release added.
