Demand to make 1951 as base year for deportation of illegal Bangladeshis

Doomdooma, May 9: Hindu Yuba-Chatra Parishad, Tinsukia District Committee, which organized a citizens’ meet on ‘Illegal migrants versus refugees and the future of Assam’  at Doomdooma Sakha Sahitya Sabha Bhabani recently, has demanded 1951 as base year for deportation of illegal Bangladeshis in Assam. Balen Baishya, president of the central committee, who was chief speaker, expressed the apprehension that because of alarming growth of Muslim population, Assam would be a part of Bangladesh in 10 years’ time from now. The symposium which had Kajal Tasha as coordinator, was attended by central organizing secretary Basanta Das, several delegates of the district and a number of citizens of Doomdooma.

The speakers were critical of the role played by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for not taking the initiative to send back the Muslim Bangladeshis from Assam. Without referring to the controversial citizenship (amendment) Bill, 2016, the speakers opted for going soft in the case of the Hindu migrants whom they call ‘refugees’ by curtailing some of the basic rights enjoyed by the genuine citizens. They also disapproved the AASU-led Assam movement culminating in signing of the Assam Accord in 1985.
