Deplorable condition of roads in Lakhimpur district to be crucial factor in panchayat polls

LAKHIMPUR: The deplorable condition of two crucial roads in Lakhimpur district has caused a lot of sufferings to the common people for the last one-and-half years. These roads are the Lakhimpur Kamala Bari Road, popularly known as KB Road, and Azad Panigaon connecting road under the Lakhimpur Legislative Assembly Constituency.

The condition of the KB Road from Ulubari via Panigaon Chariali to Simaluguri has deteriorated. It is difficult to find the existence of the road in the territory of Lohit Kabalu Gaon Panchayat under Telahi Development Block. Under such circumstances, no scheme has been taken to construct the road till date. The worst condition of the road connectivity within the said GP area is notorious for causing pregnant mothers giving birth to their child on the way. The BJP-led State Government was not potent enough to repair the road between Ulubari and Simaluguri despite its much-hyped slogan of parivartan. In this regard, even the BJP workers alleged an indifferent attitude by MP Pradan Baruah.

Similarly, local MLA Utpal Dutta has taken no steps to repair the busy Azad Panigaon Road between Bormuria Tiniali to Azad Bahpati despite demands by various organizations. At present both roads have turned into important issues for the upcoming panchayat poll for the political parties. State PWD Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma promised to construct these roads in an election campaign meeting held at Bahpati on November 26. However, both roads are going to be a factor in the panchayat poll for BJP and AGP due to the alleged lackadaisical attitude of BJP MP Pradan Baruah and AGP MLA Utpal Dutta towards the repair of the roads.

Regarding such issues, the experience of the common people with the Congress is equally bitter because the voters were compelled to dethrone the party from power for its poor governance and failure to propel development during 15 long years of the Congress rule.

However, on Thursday, a scheme amounting to Rs. 6.42 crore under State Old Priority Scheme has been granted for the repair of the KB Road while another scheme of Rs. 78 lakh has been taken up for the Azad Panigaon Road under PMGSY (Upgradation).
