Deprived of electricity, tea workers stage protest at Amguri

A CORREESPONDENT

GAURISAGAR, June 23: The irate workers of Amguri Tiffuk TE in Sivasagar district on Friday gheraoed the Amguri Revenue Circle Office for being deprived of electricity since the last three months due to the utter negligence of the Tiffuk TE authority.

More than 200 workers assembled at the Amguri-Nagaland Bus stand. Thereafter they took out a mass rally organized by Chah Sramik Mukti Sangram Samiti, Amguri Regional Committee shouting various slogans and they continued their protest in front of the Amguri revenue circle office premises for two hours despite the scorching heat.

The Circle Officer (CO) of Amguri initially did not come out to meet the protesters but when they shouted slogans against her, she came out of her office and met the protesters. They demanded to call in the manager of Tiffuk TE to the CE office immediately but in vain. Later, she assured that she would take the initiative to discuss their problems with the Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner, Labour Commissioner and TE Manager. Thereafter, the protesters submitted a memorandum to the CO Amguri.

Since the last three months more than 300 families of Tiffuk TE have been deprived of electricity. It is alleged that the TE authority has been collecting electricity consumption from those families. On the other hand, the TE authority is yet to pay a large amount of electricity bill to ASEB. As a result, the ASEB has disconnected the services. To solve this problem by negotiation, Chah Sramik Mukti Sangram Samiti, Amguri Regional Committee and the people of the TE wanted to discuss this matter with the TE authority but failed. At last, people came out on the streets for fulfillment of their demand in a democratic way.
